Last Place Finish Leads to High Pick for Panthers

The Florida Panthers have had an injury riddled season, which has helped them to the leagues worst record for the shortened 2013 NHL season. With key players from last year’s South East Division Championship squad missing considerable time, such as Kris Versteeg, Stephen Weiss, Sean Bergenheim and Ed Jovanovski and countless others throughout the season. Florida has called to its youth to fill the roles to get them through the season, potential Calder winner Jonathan Huberdeau, Drew Shore, Nick Bjugstad, Alex Petrovic, along with many more callups from their AHL affiliate. The Cats have had eight players make their NHL debut this season and it’s showed with inconsistency, shaky starts to games and some struggling to become adjusted to the new system quickly.

Finishing 30th in the league will mean that Florida can draft no lower than second overall at the NHL Entry Draft (barring a trade) and will look to add another key piece to the puzzle for its future. Much speculation says Seth Jones, a talented young defenseman will be the first overall selection for whoever holds that pick. The question is, do the Florida Panthers need another defenseman currently? With drafting Mike Matheseon in 2012, who had a solid freshman season at Boston University, along with Alex Petrovic, Erik Gudbranson, Colby Robak and Dmitry Kulikov, all recent picks have already seen NHL ice time. Offensively the Panthers rely on Huberdeau, mixed with veterans already in the lineup who may not repeat their output from this season (Tomas Kopecky and Shawn Matthias specifically).

Nick Bjugstad, a prized draft pick from 2010 has played in a handful of games and while he looks to be finding his game, one may wonder if he can turn into that first line player some expect him to be. If he doesn’t and the Cats select Jones, where does that leave the Panthers offensively? Over their 19 season history the Panthers have always struggled offensively, even in the days of Pavel Bure (55 points seperated Bure with second on the team Viktor Kozlov, who had 37 points.)

If the Panthers win the draft lottery and keep the first overall pick, my suggestion would be to trade it to the Colorado Avalanche, who have a huge desire to draft Seth Jones. I’m obviously not an NHL GM, but why not trade from first to second and gain some assets in return? Such as 32nd overall and surprising young player Tyson Barrie. Many times I’ve spotted Huberdeau on the ice, calling for a pass in which his linemates never seem to notice, a player such as Jonathan Drouin could fix this in the future. He’s also been seen making unbelievable moves around opposing defenders and make a pass to a streaking linemate, only to have it bobbled or missed completely. Could Nathan MacKinnon be the solution to this issue? In the end I feel the Panthers can do no harm with whomever they draft, the question is whether or not they’ll make their choice based on needs or best player available.

2012-2013 Interstate Faceoff Series: I-65 Faceoff

65FO

They say all roads lead to Nashville and this year’s Interstate Faceoff Series proves that statement true!  Vanderbilt hockey concludes the 2012-2013 season with this year’s installment of the Interstate Faceoff Series when they host the Alabama Frozen Tide in the I-65 Faceoff.

The last two installments of the Interstate Faceoff series, known better as the I-40 Faceoff, Vandy welcomed in-state rival Tennessee Ice Vols into Bridgestone Arena for the final game of the season.  In these two contests, Vandy sent the Ice Vols back to Knoxville without a win and retained the “Cullie” Trophy.  (6-2 in 2011 and 10-1 in 2012)

This year, Vandy has invited SECHC runner up, Alabama Frozen Tide to Nashville to play for the “Holy” Trophy, in what is sure to be an exciting game.

Vandy (9-12) played their last game in the SECHC Tournament on February 23, where they defeated Auburn and took home seventh place.

Alabama (17-11-1) finished second in the SECHC Tournament and qualified for the 2013 ACHA D3 National Tournament where they lost to the eventual national runner-up, Michigan-Flint in the first round.

Although this year’s regular season game was close with Bama (4-3), you will have to go back to September of 2006 for the last time that Vandy beat the Tide.

The inaugural I-65 Faceoff will be held April 12 at Bridgestone arena immediately following the NHL Western Conference matchup between the Nashville Predators and the visiting Dallas Stars.  Click here for more information on the game.

How Ready is Filip Forsberg?

The Nashville Predators recently acquired top prospect Filip Forsberg from the Washington Capitals. We took a moment to speak with Dennis MacInnis of ISS Hockey to get a scout’s view on Forsberg.

Justin: Filip Forsberg is considered NHL ready or very near it by many people in the hockey world. What about his game makes him different from other teenage prospects?

Dennis: Forsberg is clearly one of the most promising up-and-coming prospects in the game,  incredibly gifted well-rounded player that makes everyone around him better. He is the ultimate team player that can switch from role to role with ease, sometimes on the same shift.  His Pro potential is off the charts.

J: Do you see Forsberg making an immediate impact and playing in the NHL (Nashville) next season? Why?

D: Yes power-forward capable of playing a consistent, top-six role in the NHL and once he physically matures, he could be very difficult to contain. Size, speed, intelligence, vision and an unmatched passion and determination to succeed. Forsberg is the kind of player you can’t help but like more and more every time you get to see him play.

J:  What current NHL player can Forsberg’s play be most related to?

D: Jordan Staal –  can do everything well and his technical skills would all rank in the excellent category or [at] least border on it.

J: What type of point production do you think could be expected out of Forsberg on a yearly basis?

D: With continued development no reason he can’t be point  a game player. (80 games 80 pts). He can simply dominate the puck when he wants to. One of the best shots in his age group.

J: In your opinion, who “won” the trade between the Predators and Capitals?

D: For the present, Capitals. However, long-term – hands down Predators win “big time.” David Poile deserves a lot of credit for putting this deal together.

J: Any other quick thoughts on Filip Forsberg and what he brings to the Nashville Predators’ system?

D: Already plays complete two-way game and will fit in nicely to Predators defense 1st system.

Why We Shouldn’t Become Too Attached To Players

Cory Conacher

Cory Conacher

The NHL trade deadline has come and gone and while some teams are happy and greatly improved, others left fans upset or hoping for more moves. From a fans standpoint the deadline can be exciting, especially if your team adds a big name player such as Marian Gaborik in Columbus. The deadline may not be so fun however for other fans around the NHL, for example the Tampa Bay Lightning trading young star and potential Calder finalist Cory Conacher. Conacher is second in the NHL currently for rookie scoring and quickly had become a fan favorite in Tampa, now it looks as if he’ll continue his career in Ottawa. The general reaction around the league is that this may have been an over payment, however Tampa is getting a very talented young goaltender in return.

Fans however may not look at it that way, they’re seeing a player they’ve become attached to depart to play in another city. Imagine buying Conacher’s jersey two months ago when the season began only to find out yesterday that he was traded. I know there is frustration in being a fan and I’m not saying fans shouldn’t care about players, just maybe not so much. These players play a game, but as we were reminded during the lockout, it is also a business. If an NHL general manager finds a way to potentially improve his team he’s going to do it to fill a weakness.

We all have our favorite players, personally one of my favorites happens to be Tyson Strachan (who?) of the Florida Panthers. While he may not be “Sidney Crosby” status, he’s a hard worker who cares about the game and his team and sticks up for his teammates on the ice. I joke with him occasionally on Twitter, and if he happens to read this I swear I’m not obsessed! However, if the guy ever happens to be traded or not re-signed in the off season, will I curse my team and “protest” them, even if for a short period of time? Heck no. I’ll continue being a fan of his no matter what team he plays for, while still supporting the Florida Panthers. But that’s not going to happen anyway, because he’s going to be re-signed for 8 years, lol.

But really, just back up and look at the big picture the next time one of your favorites ends up departing for another team. Do you know him personally? Go out to lunch or beers on an off night and just hang out? There’s probably a 99% chance the answer is no, he’s just a person you see at games and occasionally at team events or possibly at a restaurant one day. Relax, take a deep breath and move past it. Imagine how Edmonton felt the day Gretzky was traded, then say to yourself, “This isn’t so bad.”

Predators Trade Erat to Washington for Forsberg

From the Nashville Predators:

Nashville, Tenn. (April 4, 2013) – Nashville Predators President of Hockey Operations/General Manager David Poile announced today that the club has acquired forward Filip Forsberg from the Washington Capitals in exchange for forwards Martin Erat and Michael Latta. Forsberg has already been signed to a three-year entry level contract and is eligible to play in North America immediately.

“With one of the best goaltenders in the world in Pekka Rinne, and the top defenseman in the game today in Shea Weber, along with Roman Josi, Kevin Klein and other young defensemen we continue to develop, we believe we are well positioned at these two positions, but have lacked a dynamic offensive forward.” Poile said. “In Filip Forsberg, we are adding one of the top rated young forwards in the world; we are excited to have him join our other emerging young talent and solid veterans at the position.”

“We have used draft picks in recent years to add players at the trade deadline. Over the last several years, we traded away four first round picks. It was imperative that we add a potentially dynamic offensive forward such as Forsberg. Our goal remains the same—to win the Stanley Cup. We believe our current team is a playoff caliber team. At the same time, we have to be mindful of the long-term and this deal allows us to acquire a top-end young offensive forward that will help us.”

Forsberg, 18 (8/14/94), posted 33 points (15g-18a) in 38 games for Leksand of Sweden’s second league in 2012-13, pacing all junior skaters and finishing second in points to only Predators 2012 second-round pick Pontus Aberg. The 6-1, 188-pound center was the recipient of the 2013 Golden Cage Award as the league’s top junior player.

Washington’s first pick, 11th overall, in the 2012 Entry Draft was recently rated the 21st rated NHL-affiliate prospect by The Hockey News. The Östervåla, Sweden native helped Sweden win gold at the 2012 World Junior Championships, then captained the Tre Kronor to a silver medal at the 2013 World Juniors, being named the tournament’s All-Star Team in the process.

Erat departs Nashville ranked second all-time on Nashville’s games played (723), goals (163), assists (318) and points (481) lists. Having helped the Predators advance to the Stanley Cup Playoffs seven of the last eight seasons, the Trebic, Czech Republic native is also tied for the franchise lead in playoff assists (15), and ranks second in postseason games played (46) and points (23).

“It is always difficult to trade a player who was drafted, developed and who has produced for the franchise for many years such as Martin Erat, however, Marty came to us in recent days and indicated a trade might be in his best interests. Thus, the process began and we were able to explore options with our primary goal being to acquire a young top end forward that would address our most critical need. We thank Martin for all his contributions to the Predators’ success over the years and wish him and his family the best in Washington.”

How The 2013 Panthers And Predators Look Compared To 2012 League Worst

From NHL.com

From NHL.com

Recently I had been looking at the Florida Panthers stats and wondered just how they would look over the course of a full 82-game season. While doing some simple math and getting the answers I decided to take it a step further and see exactly how they match up with teams from last season. Of course my thought’s turned out to be correct, as I found the numbers either dead last behind last season’s league worst, or very close to the bottom if not last.

The Panthers, despite being shutout four times this season, actually would not figure in to be last in goals scored, which would go to the Minnesota Wild (again, based off of last seasons standings.) Here’s a look at the numbers, along with last seasons worst, for comparison. I also ran the numbers on the Nashville Predators to see where they rank, included after the Panthers list.

Florida Panthers:
(All numbers based on an 82 game season using this years current pace)

Points: 58, 2011-2012 low: 65 (CBJ)
Goals: 196, 2011-2012 low: 177 (Minn), 194 (LA)
Goals Against: 308, 2011-2012 low: 281 (TB)
Goal Differential: -111, 2011-2012 low: -60 (CBJ)
Losses: 44, 2011-2012 leader: 46 (CBJ)
Wins: 21, 2011-2012 low: 29 (CBJ)
OTL: 17, 2011-2012 leader: 18 (FL)

Based off the numbers, you can determine that unless a miracle occurs for the Florida Panthers, they would be on pace for one of the worst records in the league in recent memory. The first overall selection in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft is looking more promising by the day for Florida, hopefully there isn’t a repeat of last season’s draft lotto where the most deserving team missed out on the top pick.

For Funsies, here’s the Predators numbers:

Points: 82, 2011-2012 low: 65 (CBJ)
Goals: 190, 2011-2012 low: 177 (Minn), 194 (LA)
Goals Against: 216, 2011-2012 low: 281 (TB)
Goal Differential: -26, 2011-2012 low: -60 (CBJ)
Losses: 32, 2011-2012 leader: 46 (CBJ)
Wins: 32, 2011-2012 low: 29 (CBJ)
OTL: 18, 2011-2012 leader: 18 (FL)

Clearly the Predators aren’t living up to expectations of the past, having a down season. It’s looking more and more likely for the Predators that they’ll be joining 14 other teams in the early off-season tradition of the NHL Draft Lotto. With it expected to be a deep and talented draft, maybe it’s not such a bad thing in a shortened season after all.

Injuries Continue For The Florida Panthers

Stephen Weiss - Credit: Florida Panthers

Stephen Weiss – Credit: Florida Panthers

Dale Tallon announced today that Stephen Weiss would miss the remainder of the season to undergo a wrist surgery. Weiss who is the Florida Panthers all time leader for games played may have played in his last game as a Panther, as he’s set to become a free agent in the off-season. Weiss had been struggling this season, despite Kevin Dineen attempting everything to help him out. Weiss has seen time on each of Florida’s four lines in an attempt to find new chemistry and kick-start his play, however it just hasn’t happened.

With his sub-par performance this season and now an injury added to it, it could be hard for the Panthers to deal Weiss like some had expected. The Panthers now risk losing Weiss to free agency come July if he decides not to re-sign with the Panthers, getting nothing in return for a player fans have grown to love over the years. This now also puts pressure on Weiss, stating several times that he’d like to finish his career with Florida to re-sign here, potentially for less. He can also take the “bad guy” route and run for the cash that may be thrown at him as teams may look past this seasons performance making a push to get him, the second most prized Center this off-season behind Ryan Getzlaf.

Florida has been hurting with injuries this season already, with losing Sean Bergenheim for the season, as well as Kris Versteeg, Mike Weaver, Dmitry Kulikov, Ed Jovanovski, Jose Theodore and Scottie Upshall who have all missed or will miss considerable time this season. Florida finds itself looking to its future for the upcoming games, with Jacob Markstrom now expected to take what many believe is his rightful place as the starting goaltender. Drew Shore and Jonathan Huberdeau have shown they belong on the team, both in the top 10 in rookie scoring while Huberdeau is first in rookie goals scored.

The Panthers take on the Winnipeg Jets this evening and with another loss and a Columbus Blue Jackets win against Edmonton in a battle of the Western Conferences two worst teams, the Panthers could find themselves in last place in the entire league.

Offense Through Draft Needed For Preds To Improve

nhldraft2013Given the offensive struggles of the Predators nearly half-way through this shortened 2013 season, there is little doubt the club needs to find a dynamic offensive weapon. If the Preds don’t make a splash with a mega-trade, that missing aspect of the team will have to come from the draft.

Last season, the Preds took forwards with their first 5 draft picks and haven’t taken a defenseman in the first two rounds since taking Ryan Ellis and Charles-Olivier Roussel with two of their top three picks in 2009. Though none of their picks since 2010 have made it to the parent club, they have laid the groundwork to boost their offense in the near future. Barring a trade, this will be the highest selection the Preds have owned since picking Austin Watson 18th in 2010.

There is still lots to be determined with slightly more than half the season remaining, but some prospects that should be available for the Preds in the 1st round are as follows:

Ryan+HartmanRyan Hartman - RW - West Dundee, IL USA - Hartman helped lead the US U-18 National team to a gold medal in the 2012 IIHF World Championship with 2 goals and 4 assists in 6 games to go along with 22 PIM. The 5’11″ 180 lb is listed as a winger, but can play any forward position and loves utilizing his speed on the forecheck to lay the lumber to opponents. His work ethic would fit in well with the Predators style of play.

max domiMax Domi - C - London Knights - If the last name looks familiar, it should— father Tie Domi racked up in excess of 3500 PIM over 18 NHL seasons. Max has quite a bit more offensive flair than his dad, racking up 78 points in just 58 games for the Knights of the OHL. Don’t let his smallish frame of 5’10″ 184 lbs fool you. He has been taught a thing or two about getting physical, accumulating 59 PIM as well.

adam-erneAdam Erne - RW - Quebec Remparts - Erne has picked up similar numbers to Domi with 67 points in 62 games for Quebec, with 54 PIM to boot. The New Haven, CT native has a bit more size that the Preds could use up front at 6’0″ 205 lbs with room to grow. He plays a good two-way game, also a main staple Nashville would like to see.

valentin zykovValentin Zykov - RW - Baie-Comeau Drakkar - This Russian offers great size (6’1″ 215 lbs) to go along with his potent offensive touch. He has totaled 71 points in 61 games while still playing with an edge, amassing 56 PIM. Before you draw comparisons to former Predator Alexander Radulov, Zykov plays both ways and is defensively responsible, as is noticed by his +25 rating.

No matter how the Preds draft, it always seems like they have more defensemen than forwards ready to make the jump to the pros. Although GM David Poile prefers to draft the ‘best player available’, the glaring need for offense can only be covered up for so long. Look for another push by Nashville to pick potential scoring threats in the early rounds.
