Notable Hockey Happenings – Free Agency Day 1

In the first official day of NHL Free Agency, we’ve compiled a list of notable signings/trades for the day…

  • Ottawa Senators acquire forward Bobby Ryan from Anaheim for Jakob Silfverberg, prospect Stefan Noesen and a 2014 first-round pick.
    • Ottawa bring in a 4-time 30 goal scorer in Ryan and Anaheim gets great, young talent in Silfverberg and Noesen. Winner – even.

  • Red Wings sign Daniel Alfredsson, one year, $5.5 M (including $2 M in bonuses)

    • Seems like a nasty divorce going on from Ottawa, but this is a good fit for Alfie as he’ll be playing with fellow Swede, Henrik Zetterberg.

  • Columbus Blue Jackets sign forward Nathan Horton to a seven-year contract.
    • Big signing by Columbus. The Jackets are going to be scary good next season.

  • Nashville signs Viktor Stalberg to a 4 year, $12M deal.
    • The big signing for the Preds. Adds grit, size speed and scoring upside.

  • Detroit signs Stephen Weiss to a 5 years, $4.9M deal.
    • Detroit throws lots of money at the rehabbing center (wrist).

  • Valteri Filppula agrees to 5 year deal for $5M per year with Tampa Bay.
    • Detroit wasn’t going to throw that kind of money at him. Yzerman knows him and seems think it’s a good fit, especially after dumping Lecavalier.

  • David Clarkson signs with Toronto. 7 year deal worth $5.25M per year.
    • Toronto really overpaid here, but I’m sure other teams would have loved to have added him and for even more money.

  • Mike Ribeiro to Phoenix for 4-years, $22 million.
    • Ribeiro gets paid big money to basically go almost as far away from Washington as he can.

  • Andrew Ference signs with the Edmonton Oilers for four years and $13 million.
    • Great signing by Edmonton to hopefully put some veteran defense behind the scoring machines that they already have.

  • Ryane Clowe has signed with the New Jersey Devils on a five-year deal, worth 4.85 million annually.
    • Another overpayment, but there is a void left by Clarkson that had to be filled.

  • Pittsburgh signs Rob Scuderi to a four-year contract for an average annual value of $3.375 million.
    • Scuderi goes back to Pittsburgh, a team in desperate need of defense.

  • Ottawa Senators sign forward Clarke MacArthur to a two-year contract.
    • Steal him away from the leafs and add more depth at forward.

  • Leafs sign Tyler Bozak. 5 yrs under $4.5 per.
    • They pay the “number one” center the money he wanted.

  • Travis Hamonic re-signs for 7 years with New York Islanders at 27M total.
    • Solid defenseman for the up and coming Isles.

  • Michael Ryder two-year contract is a $7 million deal with the Devils.
    • The Devils are doing work today and at the draft. Lamoriello trying to build a winner.

  • Matt Cullen agrees to terms with the Nashville Predators on a 2 years /7M total.
    • Good vet signing by the Preds to give more size up front and leadership.

  • Jarome Iginla goes to Boston.
    • That rumor turns true…a few months later.

  • Wild sign Matt Cooke to a 3-year contract.
    • The Wild just got a little edgier to play against.

What are your thoughts on the day? Winners and losers?
